February 20, 2014- Thurs., Left Chiloe Island for Puerto Varas

February 20, 2014 (Thursday)

BOTTOM LINE:
Left Chiloe driving to Puerto Varas

NOTEWORTHY:  Puerto Varas is an upscale small town on the edge of a large crystal clear lake with a view that is dominated by a large snow capped volcano that looks like Mt. St Helens before it erupted.

BACK STORY:
Following our breakfast we checked out and reluctantly left our little Palafito, heading back up to Chacao where we grabbed a couple of empanandas from our favorite little shop to enjoy on the ferry ride.

Our ride back up to Puerto Montt and into Puerto Varas was quite easy.  Puerto Varas is just north of Puerto Montt and sits at the southern tip of Lake Llanquihue.

We checked into our Bed and Breakfast which was a large blue shingled Victorian which sat at the top of a hill with a commanding view of the lake.  We were given room #14 on the top floor.  The good thing was opening the door to find a beautiful view of the lake and also Osorno Volcano...just breath taking.  The bad thing was carrying our luggage up to the top floor!

First order of business was to walk into town for a bit of exercise and to find a cell phone business where Bruce could get his data use ironed out.  We accomplished both.

The waterfront buildings of Puerto Varas had a distinctive Alpine influence.  The chalet like roof lines, chocolate and pastry shops resembled Bavarian villages...but the native Chilean/Peruvian music played in the town square were proof of where we were.  Local artisans had tents set up to sell their many textile pieces to interested tourists.

High recommendations for a local seafood restaurant sent us up the lake a bit to La Olla.  To recount the meal would cause me to replay an utterly unpleasant experience.  Besides poor service and attention being given to locals over visitors, everything was out of sorts with our food.  A critique through Trip Adviser will be where I vent my critique.
